MOSQUITO NETS FOR CHILDREN AT BAAN RUAMCHAI MAECHAN SCHOOL IN THE NORTHERN PROVINCE OF CHIANG RAI, THAILAND
A very big thank you to all those KUSU staff and students who contributed to the VE @ Keele fund to buy mosquito nets for Baan Ruamchai primary school in the rural northern province of Chiang Rai in Thailand. The total amount we have managed to raise is a staggering £324.04 which will pay for essential mosquito nets to help protect children who live at the school Monday-Friday and will also allow a contingency fund to cover any repair/replacement costs.
Some of the events that were organised to raise this money include; a Christmas tabletop sale and cake competition; students homemade cakes & cookies sale, KUSU staff alternative to Christmas cards, KUSU quiz and general donations.
The money raised will be presented to Baan Ruamchai school later this month. VE @ Keele will travel to Thailand with volunteers in July when they will also make a formal presentation to the school.
We couldn't have done it without you. Thanks to everyone for all your support!

Keele students clean up their act - and the local neighbourhood!
National Student Volunteering Week
Monday 23rd February - Sunday 1st March
With the help & support from the local community, Keele students rose to the challenge during National Student Volunteering Week 2009!
Coming out in force on Friday 27th February, up to 20 volunteers including Newcastle Borough Council Neighbourhood Wardens Mark Jones & Joanne Morris, Police Community Support Officers from Keele and Silverdale, Newcastle Streetscene and the Community Payback team, joined up with Keele students and took to the streets of Parksite in Silverdale to spend the morning clearing up, helping to create a cleaner, more pleasant environment for local people.
Streetscene provided all the equipment, including litter picking sticks, bin bags & high visibility jackets. Volunteers split up into small teams to collect a total of 52 bags of rubbish from residential and communal areas around the estate, which streetscene then safely disposed of.
Keele Volunteer Experience (VE @ Keele) Project Leader Becky Wardell said; 'National Student Volunteering Week is a great opportunity to show that Keele studetns are responsible and valuable members of the community, who really do care about the local environment. It is also a great opportunity for us to work in partnership with organisations and community groups such as Parksite Action Centre, who very kindly provided us with a meeting and resting place during the morning.
We are all responsible for the litter that we throw away, and hopefully, seeing a clean environment will encourage the litter bugs to be more respectful of the environment in future. Litter left in the streets is not only unsightly, but it can also endanger animals and wildlife, and in communal areas such as walkways and parks, can even be a hazard to humans.
Thanks toe veryone who came along, got stuck in and really helped to make a difference.
Other events organised during the week with VE @ Keele and student volunteering society ActiVE, were Afternoon Tea for Keele village residents in the Hawthrons Restaurant, includign a special performance from children of St John's Primary School, and a social evening in Keele Village Hall which included a quiz, and was well attended by village residents and campus staff.
