Your Union : Update

A big, warm welcome to your new Union Update for this week! We hope you've had a good seven days but if not don't worry, just think, the summer is edging ever closer round here! Not long until you can run barefoot around Keele's woods and gardens. Although, if everyone gets the same idea things could get a bit crowded… Well, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. In the meantime, to keep you busy during this strange weather your Union is putting together lots more stuff to do and see and dance in front of. Cast your eyes below…

Union Access KUSU

Access is restricted into the KUSU building and to the ground floor at the moment. The only accessible space on the ground floor is to the Union shop and post office and entry is via a narrow corridor from the front of the building. The shop and post office are still open throughout the redevelopment! The security office, lift and internal stairs are still accessible via the narrow corridor from the front of the KUSU building. Please click here for more information and for the accessibility maps.

Also please note, ground floor temporary entrances are for day time only! Night time entrance is via the main temporary entrance past the Kiln Cabin and reception, up the metal stairs into the Ballroom/Blueprint. If you need any assistance, please ask at the temporary reception portacabin, which is located in the mobile unit next to the Kiln Cabin, or by telephoning reception on 01782 733700.

Union Shop shop

The Union shop would like all staff and students to know that despite appearances the shop is open for business so pop in and check out the fabulous offers on drinks, confectionery and snacks, not forgetting those essential last minute stationery items for your exams. Plus some rather refreshing, offers on: Relentless, Inferno and Libertus all £1 each! Relentless Immortus and Devotion each £1.25, and Oasis 2 for just £1.30! We’re also still doing our £2.99 meal deal. We are open 7 days a week until the end of term so come on in!

Catering at Your Union

While all this work is carrying on to make the Union look beautiful, the hot and cold food available is as tasty and filling as ever! Here’s a reminder of what we’re serving in the next couple of weeks:

  • Blueprint – Coffee and afternoon tea; panini; oatcakes; jacket potatoes; cake; fruit and snacks. Opening times 9am-4pm.
  • Scruffy Squirrel will retain its usual menu, unchanged from last term which you can order at the bar! Opening times 11am to 3pm.
  • Kiln Cabin – Hot meals including the Daily Specials; burgers; chips; hot baps; panini; jacket potatoes and much more!

Farmers’ Market market

With the major redevelopment of the ground floor and concourse area, our farmers’ market has been moved around a bit recently. But currently you can still find your favourite stalls and traders on a Tuesday, outside on the Chapel Plaza. This is where it will be located for the rest of term now, so why not pay them a visit and see what they’ve got to offer? With a big stock of local produce from Ted the Pie-Man; the London Road Bakery; Everyday Delicious tarts; Staffordshire savoury eggs; fruit and vegetables from Ray Wood, and Azorie Blue’s smooth fresh coffee. Remember, it’s a great opportunity to shop locally, keep your cupboards well-stocked and stay on campus to do it!

Best Bar None – Gold Award

We are pleased to announce that Keele University Students' Union has won the Best Bar None Gold Award for a second consecutive year running. The awards are based on core national standards, with the aim of enhancing customer experience, celebrating good practice and rewarding excellence. We invite you all to visit The Scruffy Squirrel, Blueprint, K2, Bottle Bar and Shots Bar to celebrate these fabulous venues for yourself, and we're sure you'll join us in congratulating the venue staff on such a brilliant achievement!

Green Impact – Silver Award

We are also delighted to announce that Keele University Students' Union has won the Silver Green Impact Award for the third consecutive year running - we're on a roll! Green Impact is an environmental accreditation scheme which seeks to encourage, nurture, reward and celebrate good environmental practice in Students’ Unions. We have far exceeded the score required for a Gold Award, however due to the fact we have patio heaters we don't quite meet one of the essential criteria. Well done to everyone involved and good luck next year!

National Association of Student Employment Services seoty

We are very pleased to announce that one of our KUSU Student Staff members has WON the National Association of Student Employment Services award for Student Employee of the Year - On Campus Category! We would like to congratulate Samantha Ayala on her achievement!

A Massive Well Done!

2013 Calendar Competition - Deadline 21st May

It's that time of year again when we are urging all budding photographers to come forward with their fabulous photos of our beautiful campus. Every year we produce a calendar of Keele photographs which is on sale at graduation, in our Union Shop and online. If your image is chosen, you will receive a complimentary copy of the calendar, and will have your name credited whenever your photo is used. There is no limit to how many images you could submit. In fact, if your photos are extra special, they may appear in the calendar several times! All that we ask is that they follow the following rules:

  • All submitted images must be scenic shots of Keele campus.
  • All images must be submitted at a high resolution and therefore be
    suitable for print.
  • Ideally photographs need to be at least 30cm at the longest edge.

Other than that, feel free to be creative! Images can be submitted to design@kusu.keele.ac.uk, or can be brought to Claire in the Print Shop on CD or memory stick. We welcome entries from students, staff, and campus visitors. This is an exciting chance to have your photographs professionally published! The competition is due to close on Monday the 21st of May though, so get snapping!

‘Equus’ at the New Vic

This London Classic Theatre production is running from Tuesday 12th to Sat 23rd of June with an offer to all Keele students – tickets are only £5! The show recently featured Daniel Radcliffe in the main role of Alan Strang in the West End, and was a huge success.

Campus Transport first

Following the Easter Vacation we are proposing to introduce, with First Bus, a pilot scheme which will restrict the free travel on campus at peak times (7.30am to 10.30am and 3.00pm to 6.00pm). The proposal will restrict free travel throughout the campus, at these peak times, to those people in possession of both a valid KeeleCard and a Hawthorns Bus Pass. The Hawthorns Bus Pass will automatically be distributed, free of charge, to all students resident at Hawthorns. It will also be made available, upon application, to holders of staff or student parking permits who wish to use the car parks at Hawthorns.  Anyone wishing to use the Hawthorns car parks for this purpose and use the bus service to move on to the campus must be in possession of a full staff or student parking permit and should contact the Head of Security.
