Recycling On Campus

The following facilities are available at KUSU for your Recycling needs:

PAPER WASTE

Paper waste can be disposed of behind the Union in the bins provided next to the boilder house or in the bins in front of the SU next to the telephone boxes.

CARDBOARD WASTE

The brown metal skip located situated at the back of the Students’ Union is solely for cardboard waste.  Preferably all cardboard should be broken down before being placed in the skip.  The cardboard contents are collected every week by a registered recycling company.

Bottles

There are designated bins for the disposal of glass bottles behind the students Union next to the boiler house.  There is a also a bin for plastic bottles next to the telephone boxes in front of the Union and also for plastic bottles, the new Ecoverter in the SU Foyer.

ALUMINIUM CANS

These can be disposed of in the Ecoverter in the Union Foyer or in the bins to the front and the rear of the building next to the telephone boxes and boiler house respectivley.

BATTERIES

Alkaline, Nickel Cadmium, Nickel Metal Hydride, Lithium Ion and Zinc Carbon small used batteries can be placed in the recycling tubes found in the KUSU Shop and the recycling corner of the Premises/Marketing/Catering foyer (situated on the top floor of KUSU).  KUSU Premises & Facilities Department contact G & P Batteries Ltd of Wednesbury, West Midlands when collections are needed.

CDs/DVDs

Unwanted CDs and DVDs can be put into the Oxfam Gift Bank situated on the top floor in the recycling of the Premises/Marketing/Catering foyer.  Once the bank is full the CDs and DVDs are offered for sale at the Newcastle-under-Lyme Oxfam shop.

MOBILE PHONES

Envelopes are available in the Premises/Marketing/Catering foyer  for the posting on of any redundant mobile phones to the National Blind Children’s Society who receive £3 for every mobile collected.

PRINTER CARTRIDGES

Used printer cartridges  can be placed into the large cardboard container situated in the Premises/Catering/Marketing foyer of the Students’ Union.  A member of  Keele University staff  collects the cartridges and some are sent  to Moneytoschools (moneytoschools.com) and the funds are donated to the local St John’s Primary school in Keele village.  The remainder are sent to the University’s chosen recycler , the Danwood Group Ltd, Mercury Park, Mercury Way, Barton Dock Road, Urmston, Manchester M41 7SE.

SPECTACLES

Vision Aid Overseas is a charity that helps needy people in developing countries whose lives are blighted by bad eyesight, particularly in those cases where spectacles can help.  Anyone who wants to dispose of their old spectacles (must be in good condition) to help this charity can do so by placing them in the box on the table in the Marketing/Premises/Catering Foyer.  Once the box is full they will be taken to a local optician who is participating in the Vision Aid Overseas scheme.
