Accommodation Review

Today Keele University announced their decision to revise the precedent of a guarantee of accommodation for final year undergraduate students.

The background of this review lies in the significant number of first year students that continue to be displaced into off campus accommodation, by the lack of on-campus accommodation, that may not be as suitable due to the lack of time they often find themselves with. This is often because they are either Insurance or Clearing Students.

Throughout the University’s review process KUSU has recognised the needs of these students but have also appreciated that as a Students’ Union we could not support this review due to the potential impact on other students within our membership. KUSU and the KPA have, therefore, been heavily involved in negotiations and have been the key drivers of the review to insure that students are rightfully compensated for the change in precedent. Both Students’ Unions are firm in their the belief that if Keele is to remain a true campus University then that campus should be accessible to every student regardless of where they live. This means the same access to services and provisions and the same community feel.

Please note that the accommodation guarantee remains unchanged for International Students, Disabled Students and Post-graduate students.

As a result of the review KUSU and KPA have negotiated a significant number of commitments from the University to compensate these students. These will be announced in the next few days by the University.

There will be a number of rooms that will still be available for third year students and these will be balloted in the interested of fairness. Students who have not yet had the opportunity to live on-campus will be given priority in this ballot.

KUSU will endeavour to make sure we support you through this transition and will be happy to discuss any aspects if you want clarity or further explanation on.

We have the biggest ever Housing Fair planned in January which will help you to find quality off-campus accommodation and local amenities. For all of KUSU’s information about living off-campus please pop in to the IAU( located on the top floor of KUSU) or access our webpages www.kusu.net/offcampus

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch,

Rosie, Matt, Sam, Alex and Adam (KUSU Sabbatical Team) and Oliver Wakefield (KPA President)

New KUSU Premises License

       Dear students

Keele University Students' Union has recently sought permission for a new Premises License, the purpose behind the application being to allow us to increase capacity at the venue so that more of you, our students, can attend the big sell-out events such as Winterfest and Woodstoke.

So, what's new?

Our new license has granted permission for our bars to stay open until 4am:

This extra hour has now aligned us with other local entertainment venues, allowing us to provide a similar offering in a safe, familiar environment. It will also give us the flexibility to put on events at short notice based on the availability of big artists. Our aim...? Put simply, more for you!

Although the new Premises License would allow us to keep our bars open until 4am every night, we will only be doing so on the big 'one-off' events. We are, and shall remain, Drink Aware. Your safety and welfare is of utmost importance to us.

Our new license has granted permission for the premises to stay open until 5am:

We know there's nothing worse than getting to the end of a fun night out only to find that the building has to close, it's raining and your taxi hasn't arrived yet. Nightmare! Our new license will allow you, once the bars have closed, to take your time, grab a bite to eat before you go (sometimes there's nothing more appealing than cheesy chips after a night of dancing!) and ensure you're safe, warm and dry whilst waiting for your taxi or a space on one of the Safety Buses.

Again, as above, the premises will only remain open, as required, on the big 'one-off' events.

The Outback (garden area) is now included in our Premises License:

The purpose of this is to extend the footprint of the venue so that we can offer you more at our big events. The licensing hours are limited so that we continue to uphold our excellent reputation for noise reduction.

We are currently in the process of working on a final capacity agreement with the Police and Fire Service and are confident this should be in place in time for the Monsters Ball, so… watch this space!

These amendments to our Premises License will hopefully help to improve your experience here at Keele. We aim to offer you a safe and fun environment in which to socialise, and are incredibly vigilant when it comes to complying with Licensing Laws. The Police, Fire Service and Environmental Protection Team have all been a constant support during this process and a great source of advice. We will continue to work in conjunction with the Police, Fire Service and Environmental Protection Team to ensure your continued safety. We hope you will enjoy the great range of events we will be putting on in the coming months, and look forward to seeing you at the Monsters Ball!

If you have any concerns or queries, please email marketing@kusu.keele.ac.uk and we'll be only too happy to help!

Parcel and Post Collection

We have been experiencing some difficulties with the volume of registered mail and parcels being received at the Students' Union, we appreciate that this is affecting the level of service we have been able to provide and understand that this may be causing inconvenience and frustration. We apologise for this, we are working very hard to improve the situation. In the short term we have had to use extra staff and an additional room to sort and distribute some parcels. The current temporary arrangement for the collection of signed for mail and parcels is outlined below. We are also now lobbying the University to work with us to provide a longer term solution and improvement to this service.

Collecting Your Post & Parcels

When a piece of post is delivered to the Students' Union for you, a card will be completed with your name and details of your parcel. The cards are either green (signed for mail) or white (other packets and parcels) and are situated at reception for green cards, or in the collection room for white cards.

If you have a green card you can collect your post and sign for it at Reception, if you have a white card you will need to go upstairs to the top floor of the Students' Union and collect your post from the room immediately at the top of the stairs on the right (previously the Travel shop).

Post Collection Times

GREEN CARD – RECEPTION (GROUND FLOOR):

8.30AM UNTIL 5PM MONDAY TO FRIDAY

2.00PM UNTIL 5PM SATURDAY & SUNDAY

WHITE CARD – OLD TRAVEL SHOP (TOP FLOOR)

2.00PM UNTIL 5PM MONDAY TO SUNDAY

We would again like to apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience while we work to make improvements to the post /parcel collection from your Students' Union.
