Changes to immigration for students who need to extend their visa

On March 31st 2009, the UK Border Agency (the Home Office) is introducing new rules for international students who need to extend their student visa.
The new Tier 4 points based system (PBS) will require students to show:
• a detailed ‘visa letter’ from the university
• a specified amount of money in their own bank account for 28 days before they make their application.
If you need to extend your visa for more than 9 months, you will need to show £1200 as well as the course fees in your own bank account (or a joint bank account as long as your name is on it) for 28 days immediately before you make the application. This money needs to be in cash, therefore cannot be shares, bonds or pension funds. For some students, this could mean needing to show over £10000 which is why it is very important that you are aware of this change now.
The account balance cannot drop below the required amount at any point during the 28 days before you make your application.
If you need to extend your visa for less than 9 months, you need to show £600 per month up to a maximum of £1200 as well as your course fees.
If you have dependents, you will also need to show funds for them. The amount of money needed has not been finalised by the UK Border Agency.
If you are sponsored by an ‘official financial sponsor’, you will need to provide a letter from them, confirming:
• your name
• the name and contact details of your official financial sponsor;
• the date of the letter
• the length of your sponsorship; and
• the amount of money you have or a statement that your official financial sponsor will cover all of your fees and living costs.
The form FLR(S) 11/08 will no longer be usable after 30th March.
For more information please speak to an advisor at Independent Advice Unit.
As this is a new policy, things may change. Always check with the IAU for the most recent information before making your application.
The rules about working will stay the same: 20 hours MAXIMUM during term time and full time during vacations.
