Report to Keele University Students’ Union Annual Meeting

Tuesday 31st January 2012

Transport and Travel

  • Double Deckers will replace the entire fleet of Number 25 bus route in the foreseeable future, realistically in September.
  • Transport and Travel as a whole has moved up the University’s agenda significantly with the University engaging all the local bus companies in dialogue around expanding bus networks and improving service.  The transport and travel survey has proved a useful starting place for these discussions with more serious looking to happen early February. All in all this looks very promising, although have no tangible results to report yet things are moving significantly faster with the university’s backing so hopefully it will keep progressing.

Democracy

  • The Equality and Diversity zone (with a couple of the members of the community zone) have met a few times now and we held the first ever Welfare Forum which was very successful and effective. The second welfare is on the 30th with the University using it to help shape their E+D/ Welfare activities.
  • UEC have worked very hard on different initiatives to ensure that attendance for AGM is significantly increased.
  • Restructured and rewrote chapters of the By-laws to fit with the Trustee board. These are now been finalised and shall be presented at the next UGM

Campaigns

  • Housing- I have been doing a lot of work surrounding the Housing Fair and general awareness around housing itself. The housing fair looks to be the biggest and hopefully most successful one yet with loads of information, landlords and freebies.
  • The Newcastle council funded Crime campaign has been launched with initial success, measured by use of the website and engagement in the awesome designs etc!
  • Campaigns to keep an eye out for: Personal Tutoring, Elections, Fairtrade and many, many more!

Accommodation

  • The Accommodation guarantee and everything surrounding took a lot of time but we had a lot of success even though the situation demanded reactive rather than progressive success. I welcome any questions on KUSU’s actions throughout this process.
  • There have been a number of Accommodation issues over the Xmas Break regarding safety, access to amenities and general maintenance.  I have been working alongside relevant University members to ask why this happened and to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

Recruitment

  • I’ve been involved in a recruitment cycle for a new University members of staff.

Milk it! Mark 2

  • Milk it! Mark 2 has arrived with a slightly new look and a few less typos (but definitely still typos).

Facebook

  • As always Sam and I spend time providing support via facebook.

Case Work and IAU

  • Significant caseload and work closely with the IAU over student issues and university policy.

Student–Led Services

  • Worked alongside LGBT and members of the E+D zone on upcoming projects and campaigns.

Personal Tutors

  • Development of an effective system of personal tutoring still on going. Next Meeting 1st Febuary!

Extenuating circumstances

  • University’s revision of EC’s still ongoing.

Christmas Meal

  • Attended the Christmas meal for students who are in Keele over Christmas on Christmas eve.

Select and Save update

  • Select and Save- Ultimately the Manifesto point that I have done the least for but I have arranged a University meeting in the next couple of weeks.

University and KUSU Meetings

  • As always, Lots.
