What is an overdraft and do I need one?

Overdrafts allow you to borrow up to a certian limit when there is no money in your account, they can be useful for short term cash flow problems, many student accounts offer interest-free overdrafts to students up to a certain amount.

Overdrafts facilities are only available after permission has been given by the bank.  If you go overdrawn without permission or over your agreed overdraft limit you will be charged by your bank.

The bank can recall your overdraft anytime, meaning you will have to pay the overdraft back.
